Strength gathered for service

“Then the spirit came upon Amasai, who was chief of the captains, and he said, Thine are we, David, and on thy side, thou son of Jesse: peace, peace be unto thee, and peace be to thine helpers; for thy God helpeth thee. Then David received them, and made them captains of the band.”1 Chronicles 12:18 · KJV

Read in your Bible: 1 Chronicles 10–12.

After recalling Saul's death, Chronicles describes the people who gather around David. Their varied backgrounds and capacities contribute to the establishment of his kingdom. The account pays attention to loyalty, readiness and the ability to recognise a moment of responsibility.

A shared calling needs more than one impressive person. Different gifts can strengthen a community when joined to a worthy purpose and accountable leadership. This royal setting does not make every leader's claim divine, but it challenges the habit of leaving all responsibility to someone else.

Identify a useful contribution you can make to a good shared task. Offer it clearly and within your capacity. Ask how your help can fit the actual need instead of assuming that the most visible role is the most valuable one.

A question to sit with

What responsibility have I left to others even though I could make a useful contribution?

AN EVERYDAY ACT OF LOVE

Offer a specific, manageable piece of help to a community task that needs it.

Let us pray

God who gathers people for service, help me recognise where I can contribute. Join my abilities to humility, protect our work from personality worship and make our shared effort useful to others. Amen.
