Teach us to number our days

“So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.”Psalms 90:12 · KJV

Read in your Bible: Psalms 89–95.

The psalms reflect on God's covenant faithfulness, human frailty and the brief span of a life. Psalm 90 asks for wisdom in the face of mortality. Songs of refuge and Sabbath praise follow, placing our limited days within God's enduring rule.

Remembering mortality need not become panic about achieving everything. It can help us distinguish what deserves attention from what merely demands it. Our hope rests in God rather than in the fantasy that enough effort can make us secure against loss or death.

Review today's commitments with your limits in mind. Give proper attention to a relationship or duty you would regret neglecting. Receive rest as part of creaturely trust, not as evidence that your life lacks purpose.

A question to sit with

What deserves a place in my day because it matters, even though it is not urgent?

AN EVERYDAY ACT OF LOVE

Make time for one meaningful conversation or neglected duty before another avoidable distraction.

Let us pray

Eternal God, teach me wisdom within my limited days. Free me from frantic self-importance, help me choose what matters and let my use of time express love, trust and responsible care. Amen.
