Enough for today, rest for the seventh day

“And he said unto them, This is that which the LORD hath said, To morrow is the rest of the holy sabbath unto the LORD: bake that which ye will bake to day, and seethe that ye will seethe; and that which remaineth over lay up for you to be kept until the morning.”Exodus 16:23 · KJV

Read in your Bible: Exodus 16–18.

In the wilderness, God provides manna with instructions for daily gathering. Before the Sabbath, Israel receives a double portion and is told to rest on the seventh day. Moses also learns from Jethro that shared responsibility is wiser than exhausting himself alone.

Daily bread and sacred rest challenge the same illusion: that life depends entirely on our unending labour. The seventh-day Sabbath is presented as God's gift before the proclamation at Sinai. Rest is not indifference to responsibility, and delegation need not be a failure of care.

Prepare for Sabbath in a way that also respects the people who work beside you. Share one responsibility fairly. Let dependence on God make your rhythms more humane rather than more demanding.
