Faith without a bargain

“But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.”Daniel 3:18 · KJV

Read in your Bible: Daniel 2–3.

Daniel explains the king's dream by directing credit to the God who reveals mysteries. Later, three Jewish officials refuse the command to worship a golden image. They confess God's ability to deliver while saying their allegiance will remain even if He does not rescue them from the fire.

Their courage refuses to make obedience depend on a guaranteed escape. The story also exposes coerced worship as a misuse of political power. We can admire their fidelity without pressuring another person into danger or claiming that every believer will receive the same miraculous deliverance.

Identify a conviction you have made conditional on a favourable outcome. Seek a responsible way to remain faithful, with suitable counsel and support. Respect another person's conscience even while explaining your own belief clearly.

A question to sit with

Would my conviction remain if obedience did not bring the outcome I want?

AN EVERYDAY ACT OF LOVE

Take one supported, thoughtful step to honour a clear conviction without coercing another person.

Let us pray

Sovereign God, strengthen allegiance that does not bargain for an easy outcome. Give me wise courage, appropriate support and respect for conscience, and keep me from demanding of others risks I treat lightly. Amen.
