Redeemed before commanded

“I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.”Exodus 20:2 · KJV

Read in your Bible: Exodus 19–21.

Before proclaiming the commandments, God identifies Himself as the One who brought Israel out of bondage. The commands address worship, sacred time, family, life, faithfulness, possessions, truth and desire. They describe the life of a people already delivered.

Grace and obedience are not rivals here. Deliverance establishes the relationship in which God's law is heard. The commandments do not provide a ladder by which sinners earn rescue; they reveal love's responsibilities toward God and neighbour, including remembrance of the seventh-day Sabbath.

Consider one command as protection for someone you know. Ask Christ for the heart-level change it requires. Do not reduce obedience to an outward appearance that leaves contempt, dishonesty or exploitation untouched.

Whose wellbeing is protected by the command I find inconvenient?

Let us pray

Redeeming Father, thank You for bringing us to Yourself through Jesus. Write Your law of love in my heart, and let obedience protect my neighbour rather than feed my pride. Amen.
