The tradition that evades love

“Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye.”Mark 7:13 · KJV

Read in your Bible: Mark 6–7.

Mark records the feeding of a crowd, the disciples' struggle to understand and Jesus' confrontation with traditions that nullify God's command. His example concerns support owed to parents being withheld under a religious pretext. The discussion of purity directs attention toward what comes from the heart.

Religious language cannot make neglect holy. In Adventist reading, this debate about ritual defilement and handwashing should not be flattened into permission to ignore every biblical health distinction. The immediate challenge is to examine how a rule or custom may shelter selfish conduct.

Review a duty of care you have excused through a preferred religious explanation. Read the relevant passage in context and seek a practical response. Avoid using a disputed interpretation to distract from an obvious responsibility toward a person who needs your help.

A question to sit with

What explanation makes my neglect sound more spiritual than it is?

AN EVERYDAY ACT OF LOVE

Fulfil one clear responsibility of care you have been postponing or rationalising away.

Let us pray

Lord Jesus, expose the traditions I use to avoid love and responsibility. Give me care with Scripture, honesty about my motives and courage to correct neglect hidden beneath respectable religious words. Amen.
