Christ at the centre of an ordinary day

“And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.”Colossians 3:17 · KJV

Read in your Bible: Colossians 1–4.

Colossians declares Christ's supremacy and the fullness found in Him, then calls believers to put away destructive habits and put on compassion, patience and love. The letter reaches household relationships and ordinary work. A high view of Christ is joined to practical conduct.

Christ's authority is not permission for human domination. Ancient household instructions must not be used to defend slavery or excuse coercion. The call to do everything in His name brings accountability to our work, words and treatment of those with less power.

Choose an ordinary task and perform it with honesty and consideration for the people affected. Correct one unkind habit that has become normal. Let gratitude to Christ shape the action more than the desire to look diligent in front of a supervisor.

A question to sit with

What ordinary action would look different if I consciously did it in Christ's name?

AN EVERYDAY ACT OF LOVE

Complete a routine task carefully and treat a less influential person with deliberate respect.

Let us pray

Lord over all creation, bring my ordinary work and relationships under Your gracious authority. Teach me honesty, compassion and respect, and keep Your name from becoming an excuse for human control or exploitation. Amen.
