Ask before agreeing

“And the men took of their victuals, and asked not counsel at the mouth of the LORD.”Joshua 9:14 · KJV

Read in your Bible: Joshua 9–10.

The Gibeonites gain a treaty by presenting deceptive evidence, and Israel's leaders fail to seek the Lord's counsel. When the deception emerges, the leaders still face responsibility for their oath. Joshua then fights in response to the treaty's obligations.

The narrative exposes both the danger of hurried judgment and the seriousness of commitments. It does not make deception admirable or turn a military account into a pattern for personal revenge. Discernment involves evidence, prayer and attention to consequences for other people.

Slow down a decision that feels urgent because someone is pressing for immediate agreement. Check facts and seek wise counsel. If you have made a careless commitment, respond truthfully and consider the people affected instead of simply protecting your reputation.

A question to sit with

Which decision needs more prayer, evidence or counsel before I agree?

AN EVERYDAY ACT OF LOVE

Verify one important claim before accepting an offer or making a commitment.

Let us pray

Wise Father, steady me when pressure makes haste attractive. Teach me to seek counsel, examine evidence and honour responsibilities with integrity, including when my own earlier judgment was poor. Amen.
